Caesarian operation is a safe and common surgery in the present times and is done when there are difficulties in traditional normal delivery or if either the mother or the child or both face risks. Caesarian deliveries can be planned in advance and are called elective Ceasarian surgery. Due to risks and complications, emergency Caesarian surgeries are also performed during labour.

It is believed that the name Caesarian came from Roman personality Julius Caesar who was supposed to be born through this surgery. However, the belief has not been certified by historians for various reasons. The word is also believed to be taken from Latin word caedare which means cut

The surgery may take 20-30 minutes in case of planning. In case of emergency Caesarian procedure may take a few minutes when the incisions are made and baby is brought out.

There are several reasons why Caesarian deliveries have to be performed:

Pre-surgery

If caesarian surgery for pregnant women is planned pre-term for various reasons, baby’s lung maturity test will have to be conducted and steroid injections given as per requirement.

·         Hospital admission a day before the surgery

·         Follow doctor’s advice on fasting and medication

·         Relax and maintain coolness

Post-surgery

·         Stay at hospital may be there for two or three days depending on the condition of both mother and the baby

·         Pain will be there and doctor will suggest relief

·         Ceasarian surgery recovery is faster and walking or moving a bit will make it easier

·         Kindly be in touch with your gynecologists for complications, clots and other issues
