Bariatric surgery is a combination of medical procedures for weight loss for people suffering from obesity, commonly called overweight. Bariatric procedure is done by reducing the stomach size with the help of a gastric band. Alternately, a stomach portion is also removed by diverting the small intestine to a small pouch. This is called gastric bypass surgery. The ultimate objective of bariatric surgery lies in reducing weight through reducing stomach size.

Through bariatric surgeries, the surgeons intend to either reduce the intake of food by reducing appetite or regulate the digestive system to stop absorbing some calories or nutrients in the food.

Bariatric surgery is done as a combination to address the reason behind the excess fat rather than just clearing it. There are many types of bariatric procedures

Gastric Bypass

Gastric Bypass is done to reduce the food intake by decreasing the stomach size. With this, the food bypasses stomach and travels straight to the small intestine. Gastric surgeons create a pouch at the top of the stomach. The smaller stomach is linked with middle part of small intestine thus allowing the food to bypass the stomach.

Gastric Sleeve

This is medically called sleeve gastrectomy under which the stomach size is reduced by at least 15 percent. The portion of the stomach which produces ghrelin, hunger stimulating harmone, is removed, thereby reducing the appetite in the patient permanently. This is done in laparoscopic method.

This also reduces the stomach size, minimizing the intake of food. Under the laparoscopic gastric band, an inflatable band is placed in the upper portion of the stomach to limit the food intake.

Bariatric surgery is done either in combination or individually depending on the condition and preference. It is becoming more popular due to the permanent and longstanding ways to check weight.

Bariatric surgery is recommended internationally for obese people whose body mass index is 40, and for people with BMI of 35 but with medical conditions such as diabetes and cardiac related. Bariatric surgery is conducted after it is confirmed diet, lifestyle and exercise have not been able to reduce the weight.
